Moving Tips

Timing your removal (Book in Advance)

Certain times of the year are busier than others so we recommend that you plan your move ahead and book ideally giving 2 weeks notice, that way you can secure your ideal removal date.

Reduce time and cost

Because we charge by the hour we recommend that before the truck arrives at your door you disassemble any beds or cabinets and siphon out any waterbeds before the truck arrives at your door on the day.

Discard unused and unwanted items

It is a great idea to have a garage sale a few weeks before your move to get rid of things that you no longer want or will not need at your new place.(Great way to earn some extra cash) Alternatively if it is junk or rubbish then we suggest you take it to your local tip.

Reducing Distances

Clear Driveways to allow us park the truck as close to the house as possible that way it will reduce the time of your move, also if your packed items are placed closer to the truck this will help.

Pets and children

On the day of your move let friends or relatives take care of your pets or small children to keep them out of harms way.

Fridges and Freezers

Do not defrost your fridge until about an hour before the move to minimalise ice that will defrost in the freezer. Typically we will load your fridge on last and unload it first to ensure your produce won’t be out of the fridge or freezer for too long.

Appliances

Contact professionals to disconnect and reconnect your washing machine, dishwasher and any other appliance that needs it. Be sure to remove the microwave plate and pack safely away

Large and Heavy Items

If you have a pool table or piano please ensure you tell us when you make your booking to ensure we are prepared on the day. Also if you have any large heavy boxes please mark them as heavy with a black permanent marker.

Pot Plants

We can take heavy pot plants just ensure not to water them a couple of days before the move so they do not leak water in our trucks and damage any of your goods.

Items to Empty

Please ensure that you empty all wardrobes, cabinets and desk drawers of any loose or breakable items. Clothing may stay in any of your chest of drawers.

Make sure you have good boxes

Lots of small boxes that do not stack well in our truck will take our movers a lot more time than if you have big sturdy boxes. If you use proper removal boxes this will greatly help us relocate your home.

Moving small items

You can reduce the amount of time by taking smaller items in the car with you however don’t do too many trips because the cost of petrol these days will greatly increase the cost of your move.

The Moving Day

Although weekends and after business hours is a slightly higher rate than during the week it generally takes less time to move on weekends and after hours, and is also less disruptive to your work schedule so this might be considered.

Building access

If you are moving in to or out of a building or complex with a manager than you should advise them of your move so they can recommend a day to move that will suit everybody. They will also organize a clear entry to the building and give us exclusive use of a lift.

Organising items for your move

You should thoroughly think about what items will fit where into your new home or office so that we can put them straight where they belong. Also you should mark boxes with a black permanent marker on at least a couple of sides so we know exactly where to place them in your new residence.

At your new home or Office

• Pack a box with all the items that you will need as soon as you get to your new place      and take them with you in your car.
• Try to set up all the beds or desks first.
• Dedicate a room to store all the boxes in to avoid clutter in your new home or office.
• Have a plan as to where you want all your furniture to go and that it fits so we can move    it straight into these places for you.
• Be aware that you will not be able to switch your refrigerator on for at least 2 hours.

Before Moving Day

• Redirect all mail to your new mailing address.
• Notify your utility providers (water, gas, electricity) to have your service turned off after    your move and to connect them at your new address.
• Cancel the papers, pool maintenance, yard maintenance and cable television provider.
• Make arrangements to move your plants and pets. Make sure plants are drained of    excess water.
• Check with the manufacturer of your refrigerator, washing machine and large screen    television to see if any special preparation is needed before the move.
• Check home insurance policies to see if moving is covered, if not call to organize with    your insurance company.
• Drain the fuel from lawnmowers and other power equipment.
• If there is only off street parking, please try to secure our truck a spot by parking your    car there overnight.
• If you live in a busy area then be sure to tell neighbours you are moving because we    might need to park over a driveway.

Packing tips

A few pointers before Packing:

• The most common mistake is to underestimate the pre-packing task. It is time    consuming and should be started days before the moving date and completed well    before the truck arrives at your house.
• Use bubble wrap on all breakable items large vases, glass ware ect
• Put small items including remote controls into bags and attach to the item. Tape power    cords to their appliances.

Packing the perfect box

When packing yourself, understanding some of the basics will help.
• Try to use proper removal boxes. It will make your task easier, your items will be safer,    and your move will be completed more quickly.
• Cross tape the bottom of the box with high quality tape.
• Plan what you are putting in each box. Keep breakables to the minimum number of    boxes.
• Place a good layer of screwed-up newspaper across the bottom of the box and up the    sides.
• Form a layer of the heaviest items, individually wrapped in paper or bubble wrap if need    be. Never let newspaper touch your goods as the ink rubs off. Make sure they fit snugly    together so there will be no movement.
• On top of this layer of wrapped items, place another layer of crushed newspaper, and    again up the sides.
• Continue layering the items wrapped in plain paper between layers of crushed    newspaper, working up from the heavier items at the bottom, to the lighter, finer items on    the top.
• Finish flush to the top of the box with a final layer of crushed newspaper. All items    should fit tightly to ensure there is no movement.
• Close and tape the box on top and bottom to secure the box than mark clearly its    contents and the room its going to.
• Don’t pack big boxes with books or heavy items they will be extremely hard to lift and    will take the movers a longer time.
